Why Engaging with our People Matters?
In our previous article, we covered several challenges that our business and people are bound to face in the year 2023. These include work-related stress, job concerns and more importantly, a lack of engagement.
You may ask, why engagement? Why is it important to our organization and people?
What is Employee Engagement?
Before we begin, let’s understand what employee engagement means:
“Employee engagement refers to how enthusiastic or dedicated an employee feels towards their job”.
For example, if an employee is engaged with what they do:
They are more productive and perform better in what they do,
They care about what they do and how it affects everyone around them, and
They feel that their efforts make a difference.
Why should it matter?
A common question most of us may have is: “Why should we bother engaging with our people?”
Here are some of the reasons why:
(1) Engagement boosts productivity
A Gallup poll highlights that engaged employees are 21% more productive than those who aren’t. Why is this so?
According to Ann Latham from Forbes, “Employees who are succeeding and feeling good about their contributions to your company are naturally more likely to be proud to work for your company, be happy to come to work each day, and feel valued.”
If we can engage with our people more frequently, we are able to also boost our organization’s productivity in the long run.
(2) Engagement helps retain talent
Keeping your people engaged also helps retain their interests in working for your organization.
According to Springworks’ Employee Engagement Guide for 2023, if our people are engaged and invested in what they’re doing, the odds of them leaving their jobs is much lower than those who are not.
So, ask yourself: Are you keeping your people engaged and performing at their best in the workplace?
(3) Engaged employees ensure customers are satisfied
Professor Stephen Covey once said, “Always treat your employees exactly as you want them to treat your best customers.”
If our employees and talents are given due engagement and acknowledgement, they’ll also make sure to engage with clients and customers to the best of their ability.
That way, our customers will feel satisfied and happy with the products and services offered.
(4) Employee engagement leads to better profits
Ultimately, employee engagement doesn’t just improve our people’s interest and dedication to their work.
It also leads to potential profits for the workplace as a whole.
Gallup’s 2022 Employee Engagement Report highlights that companies with engaged employees and talents earn 21% more profit than companies whose people are not.
This is proof that engaging with our employees can lead to more profits and growth for the company, in the long run.
These are some of the benefits that our organizations and companies stand to gain from engaging with our people. Stay tuned as we will share with you some effective and proven tips to engage with your people at work, and boost their engagement!
